I am leaf cleanser

A botanical facial cleanser and make up remover from Nature Girl California. Nature Girl is one of my favorite brands when it comes to natural skin and hair care products. They use all natural ingredients with a minimum of 75% organic content, no synthetic scents or dyes and no parabens. The packaging is gorgeously cool and the names too.

I am leaf is a creamy cleanser for dry and sensitive skin and easily removes dirt and make up.

You can buy it in Skonhetsfabriks new online store for $50 US. I just love this shop! They also stock Rich Hippies organic perfumes.

Kjaer Weis make up

Kjaer Weis has created a natural make up line that is a total must have for any fashionista. It's all about the packaging and the fact that they are all made with natural and organic ingredients makes me want them even more. Kjaer Weis is a Danish born make up artist that has managed to combine natural and organic with aestethics, something I hope we will see plenty more of in the near future.

Natural beauty tips

Natural beauty tips from me to you.

Dry skin brushing is my number one natural beauty tip. It is so easy and cheap to do and it is something that really shows off. I brush my skin before I shower almost every day and it makes the skin fresh, glowing and soft. They say it is also great for keeping cellulites at bay... It only takes a  minute and it is a completely free natural beauty tip, minus the cost for the brush of course...

Natural beauty

Being a natural beauty is so much more than just being naturally beautiful. And what is a natural beauty?

Facial oil

Treat dry skin with facial oil. If your skin get dry applying a facial oil like Trevarnos organic facial oil may be a good idea. The oil locks in moisture and helps keep the skin hydrated and fresh throughout the day.

Apply a small amount to your face after washing, before cream, both morning and night time.

A facial oil is also great for keeping mature skin moist and young as it mainly is moisture loss that creates the look of an ageing face.

By using an organic facial oil you are also minimizing the impact harsh chemicals can have on your skin and you are giving it a natural way to stay moist and glowing.

Shampoo eczema

A great organic shampoo for eczema and dry scalp is Zenz Therapys Chamomile shampoo. The organic products from Zenz Therapy are all based on aromatherapy and it's healing properties.

Using organic shampoo on dry and eczema troubled skin and scalp increases your chances of a soft and supple skin. Many of the harsh chemicals used in conventional hair care products tend to aggravate the problems. And if they do seem to help you can be sure it is only temporary as they treat the effect and not the cause. As long the cause is not treated, the problem will remain.

Chamomille is a plant that has been used for centuries for it's calming, soothing and healing effects on both mind and body. It is a gentle relaxant before bedtime and it calms the wild female hormones. When applied to the skin chamomile will soothe and heal and combined with oils it is an efficient moisturizer.

Skin care products based on aromatherapy has the double effect of nurturing your soul at the same time as your skin and the combination is unbeatable.

Protect your hair from the sun

Protect your hair from the strong summer sun with these simple tips.

1. Wear a hat. Very easy, yes, but most people don't do it.
2. Wear a spray on sunscreen for hair. There a plenty of brands out there that makes sunscreen for hair but it can be tricky to find one from an organic supplier. I still have not been able to find a good one so if you know of any I'd be delighted to hear from you. Using a leave in conditioner or treatment also helps protect the hair.
3. Frequently use treatments to strengthen and replenish the hair.
4. Tie your hair up in a knot or braid it when sunbathing if you don't want to wear a hat or headscarf. headscarves are a summer trend so use it to your advantage.

Organic make up

Lotus Make Up is 100% USDA certfied organic and contains no nasties such as parabens and other stuff. The make up feels really luxurious and comes in a glamorous packaging.

The mascara gives full and volumized lashes and the eye shadows can be used as eye liners with a drop of water on a skinny tiny brush. The foundation feels like silk on the skin and also has SPF 20. Lotus Pure Organics has a skin care range to match the make up but I havent tried it yet. Soon coming with a review.

Monday is fabulous

I really love getting in to work at 12, although it means working later in the evening I do enjoy a good sleep in. I have this vision of a perfect life where i wake up at 7 every morning to have a small breakfast with a cup of tea and a fashion magazine. Then go for a short walk and when I get home I'd do some morning yoga exercises. This never happens as I love snoozing for hours on end and the only occasion I do get up is when I have the laundry booked at 7am.

Maybe I can just turn it all around? Keep my snooze button on and do the morning stuff before I go to bed...

The husband is always playing video games and prefers me out of the way.

Yeah. From today I am replacing 2 1/2 men and CSI with yoga, tea and a walk.

Organic hair color

Pure and organic hair color is not a hairdressers dream. It consists of herbs and is very limited in shades and tones. Most of you know about henna, the herbal organic hair dye used as far back as in ancient Egypt. This is where we are going if we want completely organic hairdyes and it is just not good enough for me.

In my hair salon I work with an Italian brand of ammonia free hair dye. My options are unlimited when it comes to choosing the shades my clients desire and as it is ammonia free it does not make me sick.

When working with the larger brands of hair color such as Schwarzkopf, Wella, Matrix and Goldwell my nose gets runny and my head starts aching. With ammonia free hair dye this does not happen.

There are many different brands of ammonia free hair dye out there and depending on what country you reside in your options may vary but here are some of the brands I know of that are good.

Greenlight Luxury (Italy)
YO. Coloring (Italy)
Original & Mineral (Australia)
CHI Ionic (America)

For some reason many of the ammonia free hair dyes originates from Italy and I really have no idea why.

Many of the larger brands are now producing ammonia free hair color but with limited options in shades such as Loreals Inoa and Schwarzkopfs Essential.

Why is ammonia free hair color better?

Ammonia is used to open the cuticle of the hair to deposit the color. The ammonia does this in a harsh way and leaves it wide open after the process of coloring is done with. It is also used as an activator for the color.

When using ammonia free hair color the color is deposited within the hair in a more gentle way .This also means a shinier, healthier and even stronger hair in the end as the hair structure is less tampered with. Although the color may fade a bit quicker this is so much better for the hair.

Tuesday is great

Organic shop. I felt great waking up today! So excited to see what this beautiful Tuesday has to offer. I'm at the kitchen table with my laptop and a cup of chamomile tea waiting for the laundry to finish. I just sent off an order so I'll get plenty of more stock at the end of the week. I just love ordering products and organizing that bit of my business, when it comes to selling it I'm not much of the superstar I wish I'd be. Maybe I should hire someone to do that for me?

Dry skin brushing

Dry skin brushing is a great, easy and cheap way of getting a fabulous and smooth skin. This is something I do before every shower and it has improved the feeling and softness of my skin as well as the look of it.

How do dry skin brushing?

Get a small skin brush from the supermarket or any shop that stocks body care products, my skin brush is from the Body Shop and is round with a small knob to hold. There are various designs so look around and choose the one you like the most.

Before you are about to have a shower gently brush your skin in circular movements from your feet up to the belly. I pay extra attention around the thigh area to prevent and treat cellulites. Work your way around the torso in clock wise movements, and then out the arms, when you get to the neck your work is finished and you can jump in the shower. Finish a hot shower with really cold water to wake up your blood circulation and yourself even more.

Benefits of dry skin brushing

Dry skin brushing increases the blood circulation in your skin thus cleanses the lymphatic system, strengthens the immune system and stimulates the hormone and oil producing glands.

With the circulating movement on your belly it can help digestion, go clock wise as this is the direction the digestion works in.

It removes cellulites and dead skin, and tightens the skin to prevent premature ageing.

The benefetis are numerous and I also find the time I spend doing the dry skin brushing therapeutic as it is one of very few moments during the day that I spend solely on my own, with my own body.

Organic haircare

Zenz Therapy is an exclusive organic haircare label from Denmark. They produce professional organic haircare products based on aromatherapy.

The series is made up of 6 different shampoos and conditioner which can be mixed and used between each other. The also have 5 wonderful aromatherapeutic oils that can be used for everything. Massage, hair treatment, face oil and anything you can come to think of.

Zenz Therapy also have some hair styling products including a sea mist for volume, a molding clay and 3 shine waxes with various scents and properties.

I find this organic haircare label really professional and more like something you could go to buy in the hair salon as the packaging is really tasteful and feels luxurious, and the products themselves are of high quality and actually do what they promise to do.

It can be hard to find somewhere to buy them online but I found one place! It's a Swedish organic online shop and although they normally don't ship internationally I sent them an email asking them and everything was arranged very smoothly and within a couple of weeks I had the products in Sydney!

Here is a link to the shop if you want to do the same!

Organic sunscreen

Summer is coming to Europe! This means sun, and beach and tan. Make sure you get an organic or at the least a more natural sunscreen or sunblock instead of grabbing the cheapest one off the shelf in the supermarket.

Did you know that sunscreen is a beauty product full of nasties, it's often worse than all the products you put on your skin daily combined as it can contain heavy metals meant to protect you from the sun.

Organic sunscreens use physical sunblocking ingredients, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, instead of chemical ingredients like mexoryl, avobenzone and octinoxate which are common skin sensitizers and allergens.

Have a go in your local health shop to find an organic sunscreen or sunblock or try one of the many online stores which are oftentimes full of different brands so that you can browse in your own time.

Most natural and organic brands will have a suncreen or sunblock.

Weleda, Eco Cosmetics and Loving Naturals are some of the labels making organic sunscreen as well as miessence. Click here to find out more about how organic sunscreens work.

Buy organic

Buying organic beauty products will not only benefit your hair, health and the planet, but will also contribute to improve one of the main industries that are contributing to the world pollution and increase in the use of harmful chemicals.

The beauty industry along with the food and textile industries is one of the most profitable and harmful industries of our time. By buying organically produced beauty products such as organic shampoo and skin care you are telling the worlds leading users of harmful chemicals that natural is what you want. When it comes to being consumers we hold a great power as the producers and marketers are out there to please us, to give us what we want.

Panthenol in cosmetics

I get a lot of questions about Panthenol in cosmetics and here is the information I have gathered that will hopefully answer your concerns.

What is Panthenol?

It is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid, more familiar as Vitamin B5. In a living cell, panthenol is converted to pantothenic acid, which then becomes an important part of the compound “Coenzyme A”, which is important in cellular metabolism. Because panthenol binds well to hair follicles, and attracts moisture from the air, it is a moisturizing agent used in shampoos and conditioners. It lubricates the hair without feeling greasy. It smoothes roughened hair surfaces, making them shiny and easier to comb. Panthenol has Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status and is permitted for use as a food ingredient.

Panthenol is manufactured from d-pantolactone, which is a component of honey. It is not manufactured from honey. D-pantolactone is not a synthetic chemical, it is a raw material created by an enzymatic process of micro-organisms on a glucose medium.

Is Panthenol in cosmetics harmful?

Panthenol is not a synthetic chemical and is generally recognised as safe and is permitted for use as a food ingredient.

What cosmetics may contain Panthenol?

Panthenol and Pantothenic Acid can be found in moisturizers, skin care products, hair conditioners, shampoos, wave sets, and hair sprays, as well as in makeup products such as eye shadow, lipstick and mascara.

Why use Panthenol in cosmetics?
Panthenol acts as a lubricant on the skin surface, which gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance. Panthenol and Pantothenic Acid also enhance the appearance and feel of hair, by increasing hair body, suppleness, or sheen, or by improving the texture of hair that has been damaged physically or by chemical treatment.

Why use organic hair care?

All Saints Boots, Topshop Dotted Skirt, Topshop White Sequined Jacket, Zara Silk Blouse
Why use organic hair care?
The scalp is a part of our bodies that, together with any other part that grows hair, absorbs everything we put on even more efficiently due to the hair follicles. The hair follicles creates an open entrance to our body where the chemicals in non organic products can cause great harm. Many common ingredients in the non organic hair care products are known cancerogens, allergens and skin irritants, and many people suffering from the most common symptoms such as skin rashes, eczema, and dandruff are not aware of why they are suffering, and are using more harmful chemicals to treat their problems.

By using certified organic hair care you can be sure that you are avoiding all harmful and synthetic chemicals, but make sure that the products you purchase are certified organic. A big problem today is that many manufacturers of non organic hair care are labeling their products as 'organic' and 'natural' which they may not even be. A classified natural product can contain as little as 3% natural ingredients and still be classified as a 'natural' product. The other 97% can be as synthetic as they want to.

Organic Shampoo

The miessence organic hair care range is made using only natural ingredients.

Desert Flower organic shampoo is very mild and contains yucca juice and polyglucose to gently cleanse the hair while panthenol moisturises. Organic avocado oil restores lustre and hydrates dry and damaged hair ends, and organic herbs add sheen and body.

Dandruff. To treat dandruff you can add one drop of lavender essential oil and one drop of tea tree essential oil to every tablespoon of shampoo. Only blend a small amount and start with mixing the drops together in an empty round bottle. Mix the essential oils gently by rolling the bottle between your hands, then add the shampoo, put the top on and turn the bottle upside down a couple of times to mix. The reason why it is important to mix the oils gently is to preserve them and not crush them and therefore minimize their healing properties.

Dandruff treatment. To make your own dandruff treatment mix 2 drops of lavender essential oil with two drops of tea tree oil to one tablespoon of avocado or almond oil. Mix in the same way as for the shampoo. Use the treatment once a week or whenever the scalp is extra flaky.

The Lemon Myrtle Shampoo is a gentle cleanser and purifier for normal to oily hair, or for a deep cleanse after using a lot of styling products.

Organic conditioner

Shine Herbal Conditioner hydrates, conditions and protects the hair with nourishing and emollient moringa seed oil from Tanzania. Pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) and organic herbs promote lustre and body. Naturally balances the pH with organic apple cider vinegar. The organic hair conditioner can be used as an intensive leave in treatment or a normal conditioner to be rinsed out.

To help detangle and strengthen your locks you can use the miessence Organic Hair Repair Treatment which also rebuilds the hairs elasticity.

Give yourself an organic facial

Organic facial

Dad's Favorite Shirt, Floral Skirt from Forever 21

Are you having an organic facial at home, what organic face care products can you use for your organic facial? The misessence organic face care brand provides a full range of certified organic facial products so that you can create a fabulous healthy looking skin at home. Use the chart above to determine your skin profile and then find the suitable exfoliant, organic mask and treatment

1. Exfoliate. Start your organic facial with our gentle exfoliant to clear congestion resulting from a build-up of dead, dry surface skin cells.

2. Mineral Mask. On dry skin, then apply our organic mineral mask that gently cleanses the skin while removing toxins and impurities. The organic mask firms, tones and refines the skin, promoting a smooth, supple, and clear face complexion.

3. Finish with our organic toner, organic moisturiser and treatment to suit your skin.

Why organic exfoliate my skin?
A build up of dead skin cells causes a rough and dull appearance. Exfoliating the top layers of dehydrated cells promotes a youthful, glowing skin.

How to use the organic exfoliant?
Squeeze a small amount of exfoliant onto damp fingertips and GENTLY massage onto damp skin using a small circular motion, paying particular attention to T-zone if necessary.

How do I use the organic mask?
Mix the organic mask using the jar lid as a bowl. Make a smooth paste by mixing 1 tsp of purified water with 1 heaped tsp of organic mask powder. Stir to form a smooth paste and smooth a generous amount of the organic mask onto the face and neck. Lie down with your feet up and relax for 10-15 minutes, until the mask is almost dry. Rinse off with plenty of tepid water and a soft cloth.

Ways to find an organic hair salon.

Find out what professional products organic hair salons use and contact the producers to see if they have any stockists and customers in your area.

An organic hair salon is a salon that is using natural and organic products and treatments. There are also many other details to consider such as using an energy efficient electricity and gas company, saving water, recycling and only using environmentally friendly suppliers of everything from furniture to wall paint to business cards and flyers.

Organic brand

How to find organic brands. Organic brands tend to be less visible and not as easy to find as the leading brands.

Find organic brands via lists on the certification agencies websites such as USDA and Australian Certified Organic. For example USDA lists all organic brands that they have certified which makes it really easy to get an overview.

Click here to see Wikipedias list of organic certification bodies (to be found at the bottom of the page).

Another way to find organic brands is to shop around both in physical stores in your local area that stocks organic products as well as find online shops. Having a look in the many organic online shops can be fun and it can also quite quickly give you an idea of what organic brands are the leading on the market and what to look for in a physical store.

Many organic brands are very visibly organic using natural colors on the packaging as well as using natural symbols while some look like any normal non organic product would.

There are a lot of non organic brands out there that are using colors and images that we easily associate with being organic only to increase sales and attract an organic customer base, so be careful when shopping and always look for products that are certified organic.

Something that is also starting to happen is that many natural and organic brands are taking steps to make organic products more attractive to a wider market and are therefore not making their products look like the stereotype product people expect. This is a great way of attracting new customers but can also make it more difficult for the devoted organic consumers to find their products.

Printed media and magazines aimed at an organic audience is growing fast and there are currently quite a few really great magazines out there so go grab one and I'm sure you'll get plenty of organic brands from both articles and advertisements.

Become an organic beauty

Becoming a natural organic beauty is as easy as 123!

I'll tell you my own story. It could be really long but I'll make it short so you don't loose interest ok?

In my late teens I got interested in organic products and what they could do for my health, I started buying organic food but was still not much into organic beauty products. Being a hairdresser and all I did not have a care in the world about the toxins I was exposing myself to on a daily basis. But the food, that was really important!

I moved to London at the age of 21 and bought most of my food at Planet Organic and this is where my interest for organic beauty products started. I switched to organic shampoo and body wash and even face care. Make up was still out of the question as I am a big fan of brands such as MAC and Urban Decay.

Then I sort of forgot about the whole organic thing when I went backpacking in Asia, although their lack of knowledge and ignorance for nature was a bit of a wake up call as to how other cultures treat the planet.

The backpacking took me around the world and I ended up in Sydney, a very eco conscious city, and this is where I am now. A few months ago my organic interest sparked to life once again and this time it hit me with full force. Having lived in Sydney for more than two years I had bought the odd organic product and little cherry tomato but that was it. The change in consciousness just happened one day when I was surfing the internet and found some articles on organic beauty and the dangers associated with the products we use every day.

It may seem drastic but all of a sudden I just could not stand the beautiful products in my bathroom cabinet. Expensive labels such as Redken, MAC, and Clinique got thrown out to make room for all certified organic beauty products and it felt great!

Making the switch to organic is all about commitment. Commit to care for your body and your health as well as our planet and treat them with the respect they deserve. I believe the beauty industry have a long way to go before it is as pure as I want it to be but we are on our way to a greener planet full of healthy, happy, and beautiful people.

When I made the commitment to become an organic beauty I became a representative for organic beauty products. This allowed me purchase a whole new set of all organic beauty products and even washing up liquid for a small price and now I am even making some money from the whole thing! Money should not be an issue when it comes to saving the planet but unfortunately it oftentimes is.

Why is organic more expensive?

Did you know that organic products are more expensive due to the way the ingredients are farmed? Organic produce is farmed in a more traditional way and the lack of pesticides and other harmful chemicals that can make the crops grow faster and bigger are banned. The packaging is also more expensive to produce as they do not leak toxins into the product it holds as many cheap bottles do.
