Ammonia free hair color

Yo. Coloring is the new, innovative ammonia free hair color line from the Kemon research laboratories that dedicates special attention to the naturalness of the formula and comfort during application. The main treating ingredient is yoghurt extract as the lactose contained in yoghurt has hydrating, nourishing, protecting, anti-oxidant and restoring properties and helps keep hair strong and healthy.

Yo. Coloring provides maximum ammonia free coloring to eliminate unpleasant odours and reduce hair swelling to a minimum thus maintaining the quality of the hair preventing it from becoming damaged. The hair color is also PPD free and careful research has led to the selection and use of extremely pure oxidation intermediates that provide maximum security in toxicological terms.

The extremely small size of the molecules means that the pigments of the hair color do not oxidise outside of the hair but rather penetrate easily inside it without significantly swelling the cuticle. The molecules only oxidise once they are inside the structure, becoming larger and remaining firmly anchored. This translates into shine, color stability and intact hair.

1. Apply a texturising spray like John Masters Organics Sea Mist, Sea Salt Spray ($27.30 at Green Organics), to freshly washed hair and comb through.

2. Then rough-dry with your head upside down to remove moisture from the roots, using your fingers to maintain natural texture and inject body in your organic hair style.

3. Take a low side part and pull hair to the opposite side. Split hair into three sections, taking the outside section into the middle to create a thick plait.

5. To give the plait a more lived-in look, pull at a few of the loops slightly to loosen it up and brush your fingers up the plait to add texture.

Organics sunscreen

Why use organic sunscreen?

Why use an organic sunscreen as opposed to a normal sunscreen or sunblock? The latest research shows that many of the common ingredients in the average sunscreen are highly toxic and may cause more harm than good to our bodies when exposed to sunlight.

What are the toxic ingredients in common sunscreens?

Octyl-methoxycinnamate. Produces free radicals (single molecular oxygen) known to be toxic to cells.

Titanium dioxide. Causes DNA damage (the cells genetic material) due to superoxide radicals, active oxygen radicals and hydroxyl radicals when exposed to sunlight.

Oxybenzone. Is rapidly oxidised in the presence of light and inactivates important antioxidant systems in the skin (the skins natural protection system).

PABA. Produces free radicals in the presence of light.

Cinoxate. Causes DNA damage (sister chromatid exchanges)

So what does this all mean?

It basically means that the ingredients in common sunsreens are causing more harm to your skin than good. We apply sunscreen to our bodies to protect ourselves from the sun and the damage the UV rays can cause, but what we unknowingly get is a toxic cocktail that can more or less speed up our bodies ageing and cause severe damage to our DNA structure and skin.

Certified organic suncreen

Reflect is a water-free nourishing organics sunscreen with natural minerals that help reflect damaging ultraviolet radiation. Microfine zinc oxide offers protection from harmful rays whilst organic olive oil keeps the skin supple. Potent antioxidants including natural vitamin E, beta carotene and polygonum extract, protect the skin from premature aging and prevent damage caused by the sun. This organic sunscreen is gentle enough to use on babies, organic baby sunscreen.

How do I use Reflect Outdoor Balm organic sunscreen?

Apply generously to skin surfaces exposed to sunlight 20 minutes before exposure. Reapply every two hours. Store below 30oC / 86oF

Where can I buy organic sunscreen?

You can buy the organics sunscreen from miessence in .phy organics online store.

What is the purpose of Alcohol Isopropyl in beauty products?

Dangerous synthetic chemicals used in every day personal care products.

Isopropyl Alcohol is a very drying and irritating solvent and dehydrator that strips your skin's natural acid mantle, making us more vulnerable to bacteria, moulds and viruses. It is made from propylene, a petroleum derivative and it may promote brown spots and premature aging of skin.

Why use Alcohol Isopropyl in beauty products?

It is commonly used as a solvent in hair care products. It is extremely damaging to eyes and is a well known skin irritant. Isopropanol is also a potent central nervous system depressant and large amounts can lead to renal failure. It is an animal carcinogen and teratogen.

Dr.Hauschka Neem Hair Oil

How often should I use a treatment on my bleached, damaged hair?

Use an organic hair treatment once a week to reconstruct and maintain a healthy hair.

How often should I use a hair treatment on my natural hair?

Use every other week to maintain your healthy pure hair.

How often should I use a hair treatment on my colored hair?

It depends on the quality and structure of the hair. If it is healthy you may want to use a treatment every other week for maintenance. If your hair is brightly colored in reds or purple tones you should be cautious of using a treatment unless it is specifically made for a colored hair as it tends to strip the hair of the color.

How do I use the organic treatment?

Apply the hair treatment to wet, clean hair and leave in for 2-4 minutes or longer.

Where can I buy an organic hair treatment?

Online is the easiest way to go for organic products an many organic online store stocks a great variety of organic beauty brands and makes it really easy for you to get all your organic beauty products in one shop and delivered to your door.

Why choose an organic face cream?

If you are searching for organic face cream or organic moisturizer to buy, you will surely come across Burt’s Bees.  Many of their products fall under the heading of “antioxidant face cream organic”, since honey enzymes have antioxidant activity and what could be more natural than honey?  But, does that mean they’re safe?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) does not seem to think so.  A non-profit watchdog group for consumer safety, EWG has created a database that allows you to look up the products you are currently using and find out how safe the ingredients really are.

The website is called “Skin Deep” and they rank products on a scale of 0-10, with zero being the safest and ten being the most hazardous.  Some of Burt’s antioxidant face cream organic solutions received a score of zero.  Others ranked as high as “six” on the scale.  Why?

Well they have over 149 products and each of them carries different concerns, but Burt’s organic face cream for moisturizing is rated moderately hazardous.  The reasons are several.

One of the components that makes Burt’s products rank so high is “fragrance”.  The use of the word is a loophole left by regulating organizations that allow companies to protect their “secret formulas”.

But, since there is no way for the consumer to know what synthetic chemical was used to create the scent, EWG says that we should simply avoid buying products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient.

Dermatologists say that we should always buy fragrance-free and preservative-free products, in order to avoid allergic reactions. One of the reasons that Burt’s antioxidant organic face cream solution received a five is the inclusion of fragrance.  Another is the inclusion of sodium borate, which is more commonly known as “Borax”.

Borax is a strong cleanser.  Why would it even be included in moisturizing organic face cream?  It makes no sense.  But, EWG’s problem with the ingredient is that it is a poison.  It causes skin irritation, initially, which includes redness.  On abraded skin, such as might occur after shaving, the compound is particularly toxic and very slowly eliminated from the system.

Borax is not something that I expected to find in an antioxidant face cream organic solution.  But, the more I research popular skincare products, the more I realize that the company’s that make them simply aren’t thinking about our safety.

The best antioxidant organic face cream and moisturizer compounds that I have seen come from New Zealand.  They contain “Active Manuka Honey”, which has the highest antioxidant activity of any variety of honey, making this a very safe honey.  It is an effective antibacterial, contributes to healing, can be used on broken of damaged skin, without worry and it will not cause irritation.

Nothing in an organic face cream or organic moisturizer should increase free radical production, but many organic compounds, such as oxybenzone, damage DNA, increase free radical production and the risk of skin cancer.

You should look for organic face cream  that’s “safe enough to eat”.  Otherwise, you could be using a poison.  Always shop for health and safety first!

Organics skin care

The organic skin care products by miessence

Skin care online. The miessence organic skin care brand contains products for a complete beauty regime using no synthetic chemicals and all certified organic nutritious skin care ingredients to create a healthy skin.

The daily routine is based around 3 products and are available for all four skin types. The first step in your new organic beauty routine is the cleanse that is applied to a lightly wet face and then removed with a damp cloth. The second step is the skin conditioner to be gently massaged onto your clean face and decolletage before applying your organic moisturizer. The third step is to apply the moisturizer to face and decolletage to provide protection and nourishment.

1. Cleanse

2. Condition

3. Moisturize

Why cleanse my face?

Cleansing your face removes the top layer of dead cells, oil, perspiration and pollution. If your skin is not cleansed properly it becomes dull and flaky and the oil glands block up with dirt and cellular waste, causing breakouts and congestion.

How do I use the organic misessence cleanser?

Gently press the face with a warm, soft cloth to soften and prepare the skin for cleansing. Massage one or two pumps of cleanser into your face and neck. Remove with a damp cloth and plenty of water. If you are wearing make up, a second cleanse is necessary.

How often should I clean my face?

Twice daily. Upon awakening in the morning to refresh and rejuvenate and before bedtime at night to wash away pollution and remove make up.

Why should I use the skin conditioner?

Conditioning your skin is a vital step in the miessence skincare regime. Conditioning has a twofold purpose: To feed the skin with nutrients in the water soluble botanicals, organic herbs, and essential oils. And to provide a hydration base for the moisturizer to lock in.

How do I use the skin conditioner?

On a clean moist skin, massage 2-3 pumps of conditioner gently onto face, throat, and decolletage.

Why moisturize my skin?

Moisturizing the skin is essential to create a protective barrier against free radicals, pollution and moisture loss (one of the main causes of wrinkles). The special ingredients in our unique organic formula have a lasting effect on skin hydration and smoothness.

How to use a face moisturizer.

Apply one or two pumps of your best moisturizer to the palm of your hand. Pat and press gently onto your face, throat, and decolletage.

How many times a day should I use a moisturizer?

Twice daily. In the morning and before bedtime after cleansing and conditioning.

Jeval Hair Color - low ammonia hair dye

Low ammonia hair color, hair dye, Italian hair colour, bleach and perm. Jeval Hair Colour is the product of years of research in Milan, Italy. It stems from a philosophy that places absolute respect for the health of your hair at the top of its list. Jevals color contains plant liposomes and glycoric vegetable extracts that benefit all hair types.

The hair is preserved and protected during the coloring process by a rebalance of the hydro-lipidic state, fundamental to softness and shine. The natural botanical plant base is kind and gentle to the hair and scalp. Colour pigments of smaller molecules give superior color absorption, effectively providing 100% grey coverage, optimum colour penetration and lasting colour with a low ammonia content.

This is one of few low ammonia free hair colors on the market today but this does not mean it is free of dangerous chemicals. I would like to encourage all of you who color your hair on a regular basis to question what is in the coloring treatments, and demand a healthier alternative. The consumers, meaning you, rule the market and the products we use are on the market because they sell. Learn more about the toxic ingredients in beauty products

What are the chemicals and toxins we expose ourselves to daily doing to our bodies? Many of the beauty products such as hair, skin and body care and cosmetics as well as the food we eat contain well known carcinogens and are highly toxic. The daily dosage is fairly small but we still don't know about the awaiting accumulative effects.

Extracts from Dangerous Beauty, cosmetics and personal care by Peter Dingle & Toni Brown.
This book is an eye opening experience to what we are actually exposing ourselves on a daily basis.

"Slow poisoning (accumulation) Slow or chronic posioning can occur in two main ways. The most obvious way is by the slow accumulation of chemicals in the body. And this is quite possible with shampoos. Although the body has an excretory system to metabolize and filter out unwanted toxins, the rate at which the body absorbs them is often faster than the rate at which they can be excreted. Accumulation continues until the concentrations in the blood are high enough to toxicity and severe injury."

"The areas of greatest absorption are the scalp and other areas of body hair (because of the greater number and size of hair follicles), and areas of the body where the skin is thinner, such as the forehead, the insides of arms and thighs, the eyelids and eye area, the breasts and abdomen."
"Long term toxic effects of personal care products include blood and organ damage, damage to embryonic tissues and DNA, oestrogenicity, and carcinogenic effects."

Take care of yourself and learn more about what the products you use every day contain and the possible dangers of using them.

    What is organic?

    Certified Organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) It is an innovative method of farming and production and is increasingly being recognized as being on the leading edge of food and fibre technology into the future. Organics is not just chemical free by testing. It is about the way the product ingredients have been grown, prepared, processed and packaged. The whole system is linked;

    Soil - Plants - People - Environment

Standards to achieve certification are internationally recognised and are assured through annual audits of all certified operators by an independent third party auditor.

    What is GMO?

A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal or microorganism whose genetic code has been altered (subtracted from, or added to either the same species or a different species) in order to give it characteristics that it does not have naturally.

Scientists can now transfer genes between species that otherwise would be incapable of mating, for example, a goat and a spider. This is what we call transgenesis. Little is known about the long-term effects of such manipulations on humans, plants, animals and/or the environment. And while some see GMO's as the way to the future, others believe that scientists have gone too far, tinkering with the essence of life.

Organic hair care - John Masters

Eco friendly green and natural organic hair care. Paraben and sulfate free certified organic hair care and styling products. Getting a gorgeous hairstyle doesn't mean you can't be globally earth conscious. John Masters Organics is quickly rising to the forefront of organic and natural salon beauty products for both skin and hair. Founder and New York native, John Masters, started styling hair in 1975, fresh out of high school. At the time, the inhalation of harsh salon chemicals weren't really much of a concern. However, Masters soon turned to organic food for a more healthy lifestyle. After discovering the negative side-effects of chemicals such as Ammonia and sulfates, Masters decided to look more closely to how they effected the body, as most were staples in common hair care products.

When he saw how damaging and dangerous synthetic chemical ingredients are for both the human body and the environment, Masters stopped styling and began inventing. John Masters Organics was created to provide a healthy alternative to common skin and hair care pollutants. All products are designed without petro-chemicals, artificial colors or fillers, sulfates, parabens, genetically modified organisms, or animal testing. Instead, the base of the products lie in wholesome, everyday ingredients such as Apple Cider Vinegar and Essential Oils like Lavender and Jojoba, which became the primary ingredients in popular products, such as the Herbal Cider Hair Clarifier & Color Sealer.

John Masters Organics products are certified organic by Quality Assurance International, California Certified Organic Farmers, and the Organic Crop Improvement Association. Furthermore, all products are vegan except for those containing Beeswax or Honey. Because Masters believes strongly in love of all living creatures, the company actively supports Animal Haven, a no-kill shelter located in New York City, and is endorsed by PETA.

The mooncup - environmental sanitary alternative

Organic, natural tampon, mooncup. Female health, menstruation and period care. The mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup, around two inches long and made from soft medical grade silicone. It is worn internally a lot lower than a tampon but, while tampons and pads absorb menstrual fluid, the Mooncup collects it. This means it doesn’t cause dryness or irritation, and also that it collects far more (three times as much as a ‘super-absorbent’ tampon’!). Because the Mooncup is reusable, you only need one so it saves you money and helps the environment, too.

The Mooncup is designed to be folded and inserted into the vagina, then removed, rinsed and reinserted up to every 8 hours. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls, allowing menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. This seal is released for removal, allowing you to empty the contents, rinse or wipe and reinsert. Comfortable, convenient and safe: the Mooncup can be used overnight and when travelling, swimming or exercising.

Click this link to learn more about the mooncup.

For me this is one of the best investments I have ever made. I bought it two years ago because I was going travelling to places where I wasn't sure I could get hold of sanitary products. As it holds much more fluid than even a super absorbing tampon does, I can wear it all day without emptying it or worry about TSS. It is very comfortable and to maintain a high standard of hygiene I always disinfect it in boiling water between menstruations.

Instead of the supermarket sanitary pads I use reusable cottonpads that are even more comfortable  and soft, and they don't dehydrate the intimate area causing itchiness.

    Soothe sunburned skin & dandruff

Calm and soothe sunburn and dandruff. Hair, skin and body. My own homemade recipe for soothing a sunburned skin and calming dandruff is with organic avocado oil, tea tree oil and lavender oil.
I only use organic and pure oils and products as the non organic cheap items are mainly  synthetic and will not contain the healing, soothing and moisturizing properties the skin needs.

    Mix

    4 tbs avocado oil
    4 drops lavender oil
    4 drops tea tree oil

Preferrably only mix enough for one treatment but if you want to prepare more make sure you keep it in an amber glass bottle and store out of sunlight to protect the essential oils.

    - For sunburn: Apply to the sunburned areas avoiding eyes and intimate areas.

    - For dry dandruff and a flaky scalp: Use every 5-7 hair wash. First wash your hair with a mild and hydrating organic shampoo, then apply the mixture to the scalp gently massaging. Leave in for 3-5 minutes before you rinse thoroughly. If your hair is long use a conditioner but make sure to not apply it near the scalp.

The avocado oil is a great moisturizer, the lavender soothes and calms the skin down while the tea tree is a disinfectant as well as a soothing agent.

www.phyorganics.com has a great variety of certified organic miessence personal care products which is what I mainly use. They stock hair care and essential oils suitable for this recipe. The avocado oil or a similar moisturizing oil can be found in your local health shop.

Makeup and harmful effects of your skin care

Women all across the world use makeup on a daily basis to try and look their best. Most medicine cabinets inside a female’s domain are filled to the brim with lots and lots of cosmetics. How many women use skincare products that are past their "best by" date? How much makeup does the average woman use in one year? Does the skin absorb all of these chemicals?

    How Much Makeup?
The average female uses up to 20 different skincare products per day (according to a recent study). This adds up to a phenomenal amount of makeup and skincare product use per year. This is particularly interesting due to the fact that most of these products contain a large helping of chemicals.

Thus, these chemicals are absorbed through the skin result in various skin problems and ageing issues. While some chemicals that are contained within skincare and makeup products might be ok to use on their own, there’s no telling when these products might do once they are mixed.

    A Chemical Reaction?
As basic chemistry teaches us, when two chemicals are mixed together there is often a reaction. Thus, the various products that women put on their face during any one given day may result in a chemical reaction that is less than positive.

What can be done about this possible problem?
Simply put, we have to be more careful about the products that we place upon our skin. It is crucial to understand what each chemical inside of a makeup or skincare product does, and whether or not it will cause a negative reaction when it is mixed with another product.

    Where Do Chemicals Go?

If a small amount of a skincare product is accidentally swallowed, then the stomach will simply break up that product resulting in no harm done. However, if a product is simply placed upon the skin, it will be instantly absorbed, and it will enter into your bloodstream almost immediately.
This means that you could be doing a lot more harm to your skin than you think. Take a good look at those chemicals that are included in your skincare and makeup products. Find out what each chemical means, and make sure that they are not part of the "chemical watch list."

    Possible Problems
Some chemicals that are currently under scrutiny include parabens and sodium lauryl sulphate. While the cosmetics industry states that there is no need for concern, this may not be entirely true.

For the time being, simply be aware of the things that you are placing upon your skin. If a skincare product is laden with chemicals, take the time to figure out what those chemicals are...and ask yourself if you should be using organic products instead.

    Go Organic
Most organic products are derived from natural sources. This means that these products contain items that are safe for your skin. You can feel good about using an organic product when it comes to your skin.

Unlike other chemical laden products, organic products will not harm your skin. In the end, it’s worth it to take a closer look at the skincare products that you do use. While there may not be any known chemical side effects at the moment, these things have a way of changing in the blink of any eye.

What is the difference between organic and natural skin care?

More and more people want to use environmentally friendly products, and skin care products are no exception. Looking at the fad and craze of people for natural  products, the manufacturers of skin care products naturally exploit  their mood  by labeling them as eco friendly or organic.

Many people believe that the descriptors "natural" and "organic" are synonymous, but there are very different meanings to the two terms.

Natural - this implies that one, some, or all of the ingredients are unprocessed and comes from nature, such as fruits, vitamins and minerals for instance; shea butter is a natural product thus a product with shea could be labeled natural. That may not mean that the skin care product was not mixed with artificial chemicals or that the natural ingredients were grown organically. "Natural" is used very loosely in the skincare industry, since it has no legal definition.

Organic - In order to be organic a product needs to be free of chemicals and pesticides during the the plant's growth. In addition, no chemicals were used to remove the oils from their plants of origin. There is no chemical processing to extract oils from plants and the shea has been grown free of pesticides, if a product with shea is labeled organic. So, organic would be an appropriate label for this product.

Skin care products which list papaya or aloe vera are a satisfactory example. If pesticides were used in the cultivation of any ingredient, such as the papaya and aloe vera, the skin care product can't be described as organic; nevertheless, it can contain chemicals and still be described as "all natural."

Also, remember that it is  possible to have allergic reactions regardless of whether a product is labeled organic or not. Someone who is allergic to bees would do well to avoid products made with beeswax or honey, and someone who is allergic to nuts should steer clear of products containing almond oil. Whether the skin care product is organic, natural, or artificial, it needs to have skin tests done.

You often see the word botanical when describing skin care products as well. Ingredients in this product may contain aloe vera, coconut or other tree or plant oils. Again, botanical products can be labeled as natural but does not mean they are also organic.

Currently there are no legal standards for the terms organic and/or natural for personal care products sold in the United States. Because of this, the makers of skin care products can make claims about their products being all natural. For example, Clairol's Herbal Essences promises an "organic experience" even though it contains over a dozen artificial chemicals and is moderately toxic. Visit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics on the web to read more about your skin care products.

While the skin care products industry  is truly a huge billion dollar business, the tall claims about their products may be far from truth many times. Additionally, if you are paying top dollar for cosmetics that read pure, natural or organic, read the label, research and decide for yourself. The ingredients will be listed in decreasing order of importance. The name of the natural or organic ingredient you look for appearing as the last in the list of contents of the product indicates that its presence is insignificant and too small to have any effect.

While I do believe in organic and natural skin care products, I also know that I need to be careful that the products I buy really are natural or organic, without unsafe chemicals. I read labels and do my own research to make sure I select "green" products because skin care products often contain chemicals that can be harmful to your health or to the environment.

Organic hair dye & toxic ingredients in hair color

Natural organic hair colour, organic eco chemical free hair salon. Ammonia free hair dye, bleach and toxic ingredient glossary. As a dedicated organic entrepreneur and professional hairdresser I have begun a hunt that on some days just feel hopeless. The chemicals in use in most salons today are well known carcinogens and many hairdressers are risking their health at work. Well known effects are asthma, allergies and even birth defects in babies as well as an increased risk of developing cancer, in particular bladder cancer.

There are organic hair salons that uses herbs to mix up their own colors which is the most earth friendly way to go as it is almost completely chemical free. However, the shades and treatments are limited and this method does not always meet todays salon standards and the needs of the customers. Below I have listed some brands that produces ammonia free hair color, some more natural and ecological than others. No matter what you choose I strongly suggest that you start questioning the quality and ingredients of the hair care products you use on a daily basis and the content of color. Statistics show that hairdressers and people who frequently dye their hair are more likely to develop cancer and other diseases linked to excessive chemical exposure.

Some of the most harmful ingredients in hair dyes are
    • Para-phenylenediamine and tetrahydro-6-nitroquinoxaline, both have shown to damage genetic material and cause cancer in animals.
    • Coal tar, a known carcinogen is used in hair colors and dyes as it creates brighter and more lasting colors than other organic vegetable dyes.
    • Formaldehyde is a preservative linked to cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity and more.
    • DMDM Hydantoin, another preservative is a known immune system toxin (and has been restricted for use in cosmetics in Japan).
    • Eugenol is a fragrance ingredient that’s associated with cancer, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and allergies
A great resource for more information on chemicals is ATSDR - Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in Atlanta, GA, USA.

    Hair colour and health
    • Ammonia and hydrogen peroxide can cause allergic reactions.
    • All the three chemicals, ammonia, p-Phenylenediamine and hydrogen peroxide are harmful for women with hair loss problems and scalp dermatitis.
    • Mercury or lead. Hair colors that use mercury, lead or other metals are very damaging.
    • Aniline dyes, which are often used in semi-permanent hair dyes, are said to be toxic and cause irritation to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes to hypersensitive people.
    • PPD. Allergic reactions from PPD are known to cause facial and neck swelling. Inhalation is likely to bring about coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath, and respiratory problems in extreme cases. Skin contact with PPD may cause rashes and eye contact irritation, redness and pain.
    • Coal-tar- The most recent studies on Coal tar-based hair colors state that “women using permanent hair dye at least once a month for a period more than one year more than double their risk of bladder cancer” (USC School of Medicine, Gago-Dominguez et al. 2001).
    Statistics
    • Women who used permanent self-administered hair dye at least once a month for a year or longer were twice as likely as women who did not use permanent hair dye to develop bladder cancer. [2]
    • Those women who used permanent dye monthly for 15 years or more were more than three times as likely to develop bladder cancer as non-dye users.[2]
    • Hairstylists and barbers with just one year or more occupational exposure to permanent hair dyes were 50% more likely to have bladder cancer than those who did not. This increased to five times — 500% — more with 10 years of professional exposure.[2]

10 synthetic ingredients to avoid in beauty products

Buying natural and organic personal care products can be difficult. Many products are falsely labeled as 'natural' and 'organic' and the ingredients are called 'naturally derived'. To be sure you are purchasing an organic product make sure it is certified organic by a known certification body. Some products may be organic but are not certified due to the costly process involved in becoming certified, these products will most likely be found in a health food store rather than the supermarket.

A natural and organic approach to health and beauty will not only benefit your skin but also your body. Many of the personal care products on the market today contains synthetic chemicals that are not only known carcinogens, sensitizers and allergens but can also contain heavy metals such as mercury and lead which is highly toxic.

Learn to read the labels and know what to avoid. Below is a list of ten toxic ingredients commonly used in personal care products claiming to be 'natural'

    1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl & Ethyl Paraben — Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Widely used even though they are known to be toxic. Are known to cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. Methyl paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals. Highly toxic.

    2. Imidazolidinyl Urea & Diazolidinyl Urea — The most common preservatives after parabens. They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals have a good antifungal, and must be combined with other preservatives. Germall 115 releases formaldehyde at just over 10°. These chemicals are toxic.

    3. Petrolatum —  A mineral oil jelly that can cause a lot of problems when used on the skin such as photosensitivity (promotes sun damage), and it tends to interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

    4. Propylene Glycol — Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. Has been known to cause allergic and toxic reactions.

    5. PVP/VA Copolymer — A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, wavesets and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons.

    6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — This synthetic substance is used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It causes eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut."

    7. Stearalkonium Chloride — A chemical used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions. Stearalkonium chloride was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, and is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which do help hair health. Toxic.

    8. Synthetic Colors — The synthetic colors used to make a cosmetic "pretty" should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Synthetic colors are believed to be cancer-causing agents.

    9. Synthetic Fragrances — The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply say "Fragrance." Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, and skin irritation.

    10. Triethanolamine — Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH and used with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.
